How interconnected is everything? From atoms and cells and tiny molecules to galaxies and black holes - it's all connected through space and time and relativity. This overwhelming concept explored in this amusing, psychedelic, mind-melting animated short film. Cosmohedron is created by the Boston-based animator / illustrator Duncan Hatch, who is known for this very hallucinogenic style. There's not much of an intro to it because not much needs to be said: "A surreal journey through the interconnections between all things." Including aliens and other weird creatures, not just humans! Just as Christopher Nolan wrote into the Tenet script: "Don't try to understand it, just feel it." Indeed. That's the best way to watch this one. I'm a big fan of these kind of mesmerizing, trippy animated creations and enjoy featuring them in our Short Film section. It's directed by a filmmaker named Michelle Schumacher, who just so happens to be J.K. Simmons' wife, and he also stars in it as well. It's a family affair! This spine-tingling thriller will be released on VOD and in theaters this May if anyone wants to catch it. A teenage girl suffering from anxiety due to a tragic event from her past finds herself hunted through the woods by a sociopath on a murderous rampage. In a harrowing hunt through the woods, Miranda finds strength she never knew she had as she tries to elude her serial killer follower. Starring J.K. A Thousand Suns is the latest creation from a filmmaker known as "Macgregor", produced by a company called Blackmilk Studio. The sci-fi anthology series set in the distant future has launched online - all six episodes (to start) are available on YouTube for free. Macgregor says his team of filmmakers, including Ruairi Robinson & Tyson Wade Johnston, worked to craft "films that serve as a gateway to our hopes, dreams... and nightmares." We posted a trailer last week, and now the first round of films are out. This is similar to Neill Blomkamp's Oats Studios or the Love Death + Robots series on Netflix, featuring fresh ideas brought vividly to life in films that are under 10 minutes. "What kind of American are you? You don't know?" Now that it's playing in theaters, Civil War is one of these movies where everyone must have a very strong Opinion™ about and make sure everyone else hears it. Every moviegoer just HAS to chime in and join the discussion. So here I am throwing my hat into the ring, so to say, with my own critical thoughts. Does it matter? Will anyone care? I doubt it, but of course I've got something to say about this movie. We all do. I'm joining the chorus in continuing to emphasize that I really believe Civil War is an empty movie and that's not a good thing. Aside from the apolitical narrative of "we're going to follow these supposedly objective war photographers" there's really nothing else new or interesting or unique it's saying about war. It is just another bland war movie, regurgitating every last war movie trope but setting in America this time. Thus the pertinent question becomes, "why?" Why set it in America? Netflix has revealed an official trailer for Thelma the Unicorn, an animated musical comedy from filmmakers Jared Hess (of Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Gentlemen Broncos) & Lynn Wang. Made by Mikros Animation and Netflix Animation, along with Buzzfeed Studios, Matchbox Hero, Scholastic Entertainment. Thelma is a small-time pony who dreams of becoming a glamorous music star. In a moment of fate, Thelma is transformed into a unicorn and she instantly rises to global stardom, but this new life of fame comes at a cost. This animated comedy stars singer / songwriter Brittany Howard as the voice of Thelma, along with Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Maliaka Mitchell, Ally Dixon, Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, and Jon Heder. This looks way, way too similar to the Sing series of movies, with singing animals competing in competitions. It's set for release later in April after first opening last week in Indonesia and other South East Asia countries. This village still holds many mysteries... Piece by piece the mystery is revealed, including the terror of the most feared entity, namely, Badarawuhi. A group of students want to do KKN and meet elders. After living in the village for days, one by one the students experience unexpected events. It turns out Mila was chosen by the snake demon to be a dancer in his world. Madman Films has debuted a wonderful new promo video for the beloved animated film Robot Dreams, which first premiered at the 2023 Cannes & Annecy Film Festivals last year. The film also snuck in and ended up nominated for Best Animated Film at the 2024 Academy Awards earlier this year, but it didn't win. This fun 60-second video examines references in this movie that are inspired by other shots & scenes in other classic movies - including from Manhattan, The Wizard of Oz, The Big Lebowski, and Psycho. A story about friendship, its importance, and its fragility. The dialogue-free animated film is based on the popular graphic novel by Sara Varon, about the adventures and misfortunes of Dog and Robot in NYC during the '80s. This intense thriller first premiered and opened in Indonesia last year, and recently played at the 2024 Rotterdam Film Festival a few months ago. We missed this trailer when it first dropped a few weeks ago, but there's still time to catch up with it. Hanky Panky is a zany no-budget indie comedy made by filmmakers Lindsey Haun & Nick Roth, who were inspired by Wet Hot American Summer and Caddyshack. This is to be filed under the "Puppets & Blood" horror subgenre. A man and his sentient napkin friend save the world from a dark evil top-hat in a cabin deep in the Utah mountains, and also learn to love. Seth Green plays (or just voices?) the top-hat, and the cast includes Jacob DeMonte-Finn, Ashley Holliday Tavares, Christina Laskay, Anthony Rutowicz, Clare Grant, Azure Parsons, and Toby Bryan. The filmmakers explain they had "literally no budget, nobody got paid, everyone chipped in for food and drugs, and we all cooperatively own the film now. We shot it on a camera our team won... Sony Pictures has debuted an amusing music video for The Garfield Movie, and since it kind of counts as another trailer (it's all footage from the movie) we're posting it below. The Garfield Movie is made by Sony Animation and Mark Dindal, the filmmaker who also directed The Emperor's New Groove and Chicken Little. The plot features Garfield reuniting with his long-lost father, a scruffy street cat, then ending up involved in a high-stakes heist with him (and Odie). Chris Pratt stars as the voice of the sarcastic, lasagna-loving tabby, alongside the voices of Samuel L. "Enter our Miniwood world!!" Click play and have fun with this Hollywood tribute. A design studio based in Athens, Greece called Yeti Pictures has debuted a 74-second long animated short film called Miniwood. This was created by the studio in their spare time as a way to promote their work and honor their favorite movies from growing up. "It's always hard to find spare time between commercial work to make these short films happen but team projects are what keeps Yeti moving forward and keeps our passion for animation alive." Directed by Yeti's Tony Zagoraios, famous scenes from these movies are recreated in their "miniworld style," with miniature characters that are direct references to action figures or toys. It features homages to classics including Jurassic Park, The Exorcist, King Kong, The Addams Family, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and RoboCop. AGC Studios + Catchlight Studios have revealed an official UK trailer for a kooky time travel comedy about a family called The Present, opening first in the UK in May this summer. Strangely his has no US date set yet, despite being a US film that should be on streaming by now. A brilliant boy discovers that he can manipulate time using a family heirloom - an old grandfather clock. He soon team up his siblings in returning to the time of their parents' separation from their in hopes of changing the outcome and stopping them from divorcing. Oh boy, this sounds a bit awkward. Actors Isla Fisher & Greg Kinnear star as the parents, with a cast including Ryan Guzman, Shay Rudolph, Amir Talai, Alphonso McAuley, Easton Rocket Sweda, Sarah Jane MacKay, & Mason Shea Joyce, with Eric Tiede. Disney has revealed an official trailer for their summer movie Young Woman and the Sea, based on the true story of the first woman to ever swim across the English Channel. It's set to open at the end of May and we've been waiting to finally see a trailer. "21 miles and a nice day for a swim." Daisy Ridley stars as Trudy Ederle, an American woman who grew up in Manhattan and learned to swim in New Jersey. After winning a gold medal at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, she eventually made the incredible English Channel swim from France to England in 1926 at the age of 20. This also co-stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston, and Glenn Fleshler. "You wanna know how this ends?" Hulu has revealed an official trailer for an intense horror thriller titled The Stranger, arriving for streaming this month. Not to be confused with the British series The Stranger, or the Australian crime film The Stranger. Some of you may recognize this, it was initially conceived as an hour-by-hour series for the app Quibi. After that app went under, it's been re-edited and reset for release as a feature film streaming on Hulu, but without much fanfare. Maika Monroe stars as a recent transplant to the Los Angeles Valley scraping by as a rideshare driver. One night, she picks up Carl at a Hollywood Hills Mansion. He appears pleasant at first, but that facade is shattered when he reveals himself to be a violent, misogynistic murderer. There have been a few other rideshare horror recently including Spree and Ride. Co-starring Dane DeHaan and Avan Jogia. This still doesn't look very good and this trailer is way too short. Johnson-directed action thriller film titled Chief of Station, which means you can pretty much ignore this right away and skip it entirely. Unless this kind of bland action is your jam. The trailer below is free to watch at least (Johnson also directed the Boudica movie last year). This one drops on VOD to watch in early May. After learning the untimely death of his wife was not accidental, a former CIA Station Chief is forced back into the espionage underworld in Eastern Europe, teaming up with an adversary to unravel a conspiracy that challenges everything he thought he knew. Aaron Eckhart stars as Ben, along with Alex Pettyfer, Olga Kurylenko, Nick Moran, Chris Petrovski, Daniel Bernhardt, Laetitia Eido, James Faulkner, Isobel Wood, and Nina Bergman.
